Why do dog beds flatten? The compression story

Foam loses rebound under repeated weight. The honest version is that no brand in this group publishes the density or rebound data that would let us compare flattening resistance — so the warranties are the only published signal.

What causes flattening

  1. Foam compression set. Closed-cell foam gradually loses the ability to spring back after being pressed.
  2. Fill migration. Shredded-foam or cotton fills shift and pack down, which is why fill-type beds are not directly comparable to solid or layered foam.
  3. Weight and time. A heavy dog in the same spot every night concentrates the load.

The number that would answer it

Foam density — pounds per cubic foot — is the standard measure for how much material is in a slab, and it is the best published predictor of durability in human mattresses. Dog bed brands in this group do not publish it. Firmness (ILD/IFD) and rebound data are also absent. So we cannot honestly rank flattening resistance.

What the warranties tell you

Big Barker Original

10-Year No-Flatten warranty on foam shape — the longest published signal in this group. Chewing, accidents, and misuse are excluded.

K9 Giant 7" Bolster

1-Year Chew Proof warranty — targets chewing, not flattening. The brand's "won't flatten under weight" is a claim, not an independent test.
