Bolster vs flat dog beds: what the rim actually changes

A bolster gives dogs an edge to rest their head against and a sense of boundary. A flat bed is an open surface. The rim also reduces the usable sleeping area — which is why the disclosed numbers matter.

Flat beds

  • Open surface — dog can stretch in any direction
  • Low profile fits crates and low-clearance spaces
  • No edge to rest against or lean on
  • Example: K9 Tough Ripstop Rectangle

Bolster beds

  • Raised rim gives a headrest and a boundary
  • The rim reduces the usable sleeping surface
  • Bolster adds height — check crate clearance
  • Example: K9 Tough Ripstop Bolster

Why the sleeping surface matters

A 28x21 bolster bed is not a 28x21 sleeping area — the rim takes part of it. K9 discloses the size S sleeping surface (20x17x3) for its bolster model but not for larger sizes. Casper discloses its inner sleep area. When a brand does not publish it, we mark it "Not disclosed" rather than estimate.
