Dog bed size guide: outer dimensions are not the sleeping area

Measure your dog from nose to base of tail, then add a few inches for stretching. And remember: a bolster bed's outer dimensions include the rim — the sleeping surface is smaller.

The measurement that matters

  1. Measure your dog from nose to base of tail while standing.
  2. Add 6–12 inches so the dog can stretch out.
  3. If the bed has a bolster, ask for the inner sleeping surface — not just the outer size.
  4. Check crate clearance if the bed goes in a crate.
